Final lining: The railway tunnels in Moss now have their permanent lining
On Friday 9 October, the final tunnel lining bay will be cast in the Carlberg tunnel. This marks the completion of the concrete lining in both railway tunnels on the Sandbukta - Moss - Saastad project.
The first tunnel cast was on 30 January 2023. On Friday 9 October 2026, the final formwork will be filled with concrete. After almost four years of work, the concrete lining of both railway tunnels is now complete.
Concrete lining is a key part of tunnel construction. The excavated rock tunnel is given a permanent concrete structure that forms the inner surface of the tunnel and provides a robust and durable structure for the future railway.
“The completion of the last tunnel casting is of course a milestone for the project. We are now looking forward to taking over the tunnel sections,” says Per Gunnar Davidsen, sub-project manager for Bane NOR’s work outside the centre of Moss.
Behind every concrete pour is extensive planning and logistics. The concrete must be produced, transported and delivered at the right pace, while formwork, reinforcement, quality control and other tunnel activities are carefully coordinated.
In total, approx. 70,000 m³ of concrete has been delivered for the lining of the two tunnels.

“Every pour requires careful planning and close cooperation between the concrete supplier, transport teams and the teams working inside the tunnels. We have managed to maintain both quality and progress throughout the entire period”, says Amalia Valero, Tunnel Manager at MossIA.
The completion of the concrete lining in both tunnels is an important milestone for the project. The work has involved many different disciplines and functions, requiring close coordination between MossIA, Bane NOR and a number of subcontractors.
“I am incredibly proud of the team. It has truly been a team effort”, says Valero.
The milestone will, of course, be celebrated. On Friday, cake will be served to all the teams who have contributed to the work.

The work continues
Although the final concrete pour has now been completed, work remains before the tunnels are ready for operation. The remaining work includes, among other things, final cleaning of the tunnel floor, technical installations and pump houses. Railway systems and installations will be carried out at a later stage as part of a separate contract.
